What you don't understand is that the Constitution was born compromised in regard to slavery. The Northern Framers were willing to give up slavery to meet the bigger vision of Natural Rights for all including life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. However, Southern intransigence to that idea forced turning a blind eye to the issue of slavery. The Constitution would not have passed otherwise. Even then, the Constitution was used to mitigate the influence of slavery. Southerners wanted to treat their slaves as people only to the extent of gaining extra representation in the House of Representatives. This was mitigated with the "3/5 Clause". The Founding Fathers, for the most part, believed in the concept of "all men are created equal", but couldn't find a way of being true to it. If this corruption of these ideas didn't gnaw at them and other Americans, the Civil War would not have come about. It was the conscience of a nation over this finally spilling over, in blood.

I used to live in the Detroit area myself and I used to see a lot of people on Eight Mile near the Southfield Freeway with signs, "Will Work For Food."

Nothing new. I moved to Ohio in 1993.
