Some will say it was the unrestricted German u-boat (submarine) attacks on merchant vessels especially after the Lusitania was sunk in 1915 killing more than a hundred (128) Americans. But, we (the U.S.) could have stopped trading with the Allied nations who were fighting against Germany.
If we stopped selling supplies (including war supplies) to Britain and France, we would not have had American ships and citizens in the war zone.
A few will say it was the Zimmerman telegram indicating a threat of German backing for a Mexican invasion of the U.S.,
but that really was not taken seriously.
Some might say it was the idealism of Woodrow Wilson to fight this "war to end all wars".
I think the major reason may have been the billions of dollars loaned to France and Britain by American bankers especially in New York and Chicago. They were gambling very big money that the Allies would win. When things became uncertain as the war went on and on, you can expect there would be strong lobbying efforts from big money interests to get America into the war on the Allied side.
The U.S. was never seriously threatened in World War One.
U.S. involvement was not necessary for home defense.
American contribution to the Allied effort was relatively small and very late in the course of the war, but it was probably decisive. The "war to end all wars" would turn out to be the main cause of an even greater war just a generation later - World war II.

The sinking of the Lusitania triggered it along with the Zimmerman telegram. There were American tourists on the Lusitania that were killed when the U boat sank it on the way to England. The Zimmerman telegraph was from the Kaiser's people to the head of the Mexican government promising that if they attack the USA, then the Germans will give them back the territory lost in the Spanish-American war (Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California, etc)

Follow the money. Public sentiment in america was neutral and slightly pro-german. The talking heads and money managers needed a war; the lusitania mysteriously sank and germany was blamed (surprise, surprise) so america was dragged into the bloodletting. Money and politics always seem to rule the day.

Spreedog sums it up perfectly.
The Lusitania reason is "sexier," but when it comes right down to it it was the money men.
What a horrific War...
