Do DVRs turn by themselves to record?

I have a DVR cable box and am curious if the unit will turn itself on if it is shut down for the night but set to record a show during that time.

My cable box will NOT turn on if it is powered off when time for a show comes around. My Dish PVR will turn itself on.

You just have to try an experiment yourself with your box.

I have a Directv DVR and mine goes on automatically when it is recording a program(s). It will shut off when the programming has finished recording.
