yes I am saying that women because of our anatomy should get more sick days then men! one extra a month and if it's a sick day I believe it should be payed for!

I dont understand why so many women want to try and pretend they're just like men when we're not! we're better off just fighting to be treated correctly according to who we are instead of trying to stuff ourselves in some body else's mold!

If is justified that women get a free pass on these (or whatever) grounds, they are not as capable or valuable and therefore should get paid less on the same grounds.

Is it a good idea to take it easy for a day or two during your period? I'd say sure, why not?

Should business finance your CHOICE to take it easy? That's a very different question. If you are lucky enough to have paid sick leave, then it does qualify as a medical absence, but you might want to save those sick days up in case of an accident, like in case you break a leg skiing or something.

Sadly, there are millions of workers who don't even have the option. They either go to work, or they don't get paid. There is a bill in Congress now called the Healthy Families Act which would require all employers to provide 7 days of sick leave per year. Please look into it.

If your period is truly debilitating, please seek medical treatment and/or consider some lifestyle changes. Your symptoms can be managed, but it takes a lot of trial and error to figure out what works best.

You can always do this---
Years ago, women would be "indisposed", and not receive visitors, or go out on social calls, when they had their period.
Only upper-class women could get away with this, of course, because there were servants around to run the house, cook, take care of the kids, etc.

WAY back in the stone age (as related by Jean Auel in her books), and probably later, too, women having their periods were supposed to go to a special "hut" away from the main camp of people----one huge survival reason for this is that predatory animals might be attracted by the smell of blood, and that would be dangerous for the whole tribe/group.

Now, in this new age, the current theory is that you'll feel better if you get up and move around, and keep to your regular schedule----no need to over-do (sports, swimming, running, etc), but just the basics you need to do to get through your day. Because of better health care, diet, hygiene, etc. (women can wear clean clothes every day, and use feminine protection), it's much simpler to live this way.

Well, if you can afford to stay home for a day or two, good for you. I wish you well. No, I don't think women should get a day or two off during their periods. I'm 45, and have had 34 years of experience with menstruation. Even if you have really heavy periods, most doctors prescribe either b/c pills, or a hysterectomy. Life goes on. Take some Ibuprophen or acetomenaphin, avoid salt for a week each month.

Well we already get paid less so what's the difference?

That said, I have taken sick days due to being ill from my period before. I realize some women don't have that many symptoms, but I do. the pain, fatigue, and mood swings interrupt my life. I feel perfectly justified in taking a sick day if I so desire. I earned them.

Don't expect any sympathy from those women who are menopausal.

Actually, those of us who do have horrible, debilitating periods can't do much about it. I also have very large cysts on my ovaries that cause crippling pain. Science is so advanced, but so far all we can do is treat the symptoms with bc pills, and if those affect you too, there is nothing to help. Educate yourselves, ladies.

Lioness honey, please read the last paragraph.

How many of you have ever missed at least some work or event because you bled through your pants and had to go change clothes?

I'm not Muslim, but I do know the Qu'ran tells women, "And stay quietly in your houses, and make not a dazzling display, like that of the former Times of Ignorance; and establish regular Prayer, and give regular Charity; and obey Allah and His Messenger." (Surah 33.33, Yusuf Ali translation) Islam grants exceptions to "stay quietly in your houses" for reasons of necessity, but some Muslims (e.g. Salafists) would definitely say she needs her husband's permission to leave. Hopefully your husband (or your future husband) is on the liberal end of the Islamic theological spectrum and allows you to come and go freely. That is your human right as a woman.

If I could afford to stay home and lounge around for the 3-5 days every month - I would.

But since I have bills to pay -- off to work I go 20-25 days a month.

no. if a woman does legitimately feel terrible while she's on her period, she can take a sick day like anybody else. periods suck sometimes. so do migraines, ulcers, and diabetes. human beings tend to have "health" problems that cause them discomfort, and menstrual pain is no different than any other bodily issue. no need for special treatment.

actually, i advocate we all get more sick days, period. in europe they are much more understanding about health problems!

Um you want a free pass. Be a stay home mom, or an online student. And if you feel that way about your periods, what are you going to do about Menopause???

You know what my anatomy might not be the same as a mans, however, my bills, rent, gas, and other needs are. Which means I need equal pay. Why am I going to get equal pay if I can't give equal work??
It is apart of life. DEAL with it.

It's not a matter of "should they" rather "would they". Given the chance would you stay at home? Should you stay at home makes it sound like having a period is something contagious. And yes I would stay in bed if I could.

Are you kidding? It ain't that bad, please. Some women do have severe issues with mood swings and cramping and migraines and whatnot. Those women should be able to take time off and usually can with a note from their doctor. Suck it up woman, suck it up! Unless you have PMDD you're better off getting out of bed and moving around. Everyone knows that exercise relieves cramping and improves your mood. I don't want any extra excuses to stay home and eat chocolate, that's counterproductive!
