Did the judge spare a convict who built the hall's magnificent chimneys?

Not Judge Jeffries -
Plaish Hall was built for Judge Leighton in 1540. At around the same time Leighton convicted a prisoner, named Sherrett, to death. However, when he learnt that Sherret was a renowned craftsman he deferred the sentence and challenged him to build the best set of chimneys in the county. Sherrett built these chimney stacks, but was still sentenced to death and hung!

Judge Jeffries was the Hanging Judge at Dorchester after the Monmouth Rebellion. Check Wikipedia, I'll not cut and paste it.
