Back in 1994, an artist by the name of Rachel Whiteread filled the last, undemolished house in a street in Tower Hamlets with concrete and then removed the house itself, leaving only the insides.

It won her the Turner Prize and was a haunting piece of artwork. It seemed to be the 'soul' of an old house and people came from all over the world to see it.

On 11 January 1995, it was demolished by the local council. Had they left it, thousands of tourists would have flocked to the area each year just to look at it, bringing much-needed money to the local area and putting Tower Hamlets on the map for the RIGHT reasons.

Today, another total a**e of a councillor has demanded that a mural by the world-famous grafitti artist Banksy, be destroyed. Why? Because, in the opinion of this lame-brain councillor, 'all grafitti is wrong.'

Banksy's work has fetched £200,000 an item. But, once again, Tower Hamlets council 'knows best.'

I think they're wrong yet again - what do you think?

Well i did visit the house, and wondered what the fuss was all about, i am not adverse to modern art but couldn't see the point at all. But i do like Banksy's work very much and have seen it around so often now i don't consider it graffiti in much the same way as just paint scrawled on a wall. I love his two policemen kissing, its funny and makes you think. He is a very good artist.

Never been rich enough to really choose where I live. Money, or rather the lack of it, has ultimately been the deciding factor. I've lived in places as far apart geographically as Moss Side and Easterhouses. One thing all such places have in common. While outsiders do down those areas as being "slums", ghettos, seed beds of crime and every other iniquity under the sun, the people who live there usually manage to form real communities that really come together when the going gets tougher than usual, not the ersatz weekend middle class theme park variety that the London luvvies have created in parts of Notting Hill, for example. If you have any sense at all keep the middle classes out. They will destroy any community. There are whole rural villages in Scotland, Northern England and Wales that only a few years ago were thriving agricultural communities that are now middle class wastelands where they contribute nothing, take all they can get cheap and price ordinary people out of house and homes.

Well I drove past the 'house' many times and dont know anyone who went out of their way to see it.
And there was nothing nearby where 'tourist' could spend their money anyway.

Did the council know it was Banksys graffitti or were they just removing an eyesore?
