No, it was under the control of Great Britain. A colony is a place where you put your own people to build a further area of you civilization.
The 13 colonies here in the States were colonies. Canada was a colony. India was more of a conquest.

Exactly No. India was never a British colony. It is more like being annexed by British from war or the kind. It's like some place in Middle East like Iraq and Turkey, where is some sought like a protectorate to British. If India is a colony to Britian, then it will not put the colonies like Singapore and Malaya (current day Malaysia) under supervision of India from around 1830s to 1850s.

I don't know as I would call it a colony, maybe a commonwealth but the British did occupy India for a long period of time. If you will get the movie Gandhi, it deals with the Indian's efforts to free themselves from the British.

But the British did settle their people and begin to exploit Indian soil for resources, which WAS a part of colonization...it just never managed to reach the point that other already colonized countries were in.

I would say it was in the process of colonization...but if you look at political science, most would say that yes it was a colonial country (of Great Britain).

Not exactly a colony. The Brits just decided they wanted it so they took it. So much for the British Empire.
