So can I ask who thinks that it is ok to leave young children alone in an unlocked hotel appartment, or at home with the doors unlocked, and for the parents to go down the pub, even if it is just down the road?
I am asking this as a lot of the arguments on here seem to suggest that lots of folk think, yes it is perfectly ok to leave kids unattended and to go out for a drink. I think its child neglect, does anyone agree with me.
Please keep an open mind to this question, imagine it was asked before the Madeleine story broke.

Shall we say children under 12 or 13? depending on their maturity of course.

****Bobemac**** the reason I am confused is that whenever I say that the McCann's were guilty of neglecting their children for leaving them alone, I get insulted, told I am mentally ill, and usually, the old favourite, "get a life"

I think its awful, i cant imagine doing it! It was the first thing i said when the story broke, how could they have left 3 small kids on their own in a strange place.....anything could have happened (which it did) but one of em could have fallen out of the bed & hurt themselves etc etc. I just dont understand it

I firmly believe that it is not ok to leave a child alone in a property for any length of time, it only takes a second for something to happen, I remember seeing a story on the news as a child when three mothers went out leaving the kids behind and the flat caught fire and all the children died! How can anybody live with that on there concience.

No it is not ok to leave children in a hotel room locked or unlocked I was a single parent for 6 years and I wouldn't dreamed of leaving my son alone. When I was married with my younger two and my eldest one was run over on hes way home from school I still made sure they were cared for before I left to take care of him.
I would like to add though that where Madeleine's parents are concerned they were perhaps lulled into a false sense of security and made a wrong decision the consequences of which will stay with them forever. They don't need complete strangers condemming them none of us is perfect. When did you first do something you shouldn't have done.

I have 4 kids and I would never leave them alone to go have a drink. As a matter of fact i don't leave them alone at all for any reason so i agree with you that its a bad thing to leave young children alone. Now when my oldest reaches 12 then she can babysit

I absoloutely agree, the kids could wake up and do anything, ie play with knives, find matches etc. Kids are not responsible enough to look after themselves and never in a million years would I think any parent would be stupid enough to leave children alone in a strange place. It's bizarre.

at the end of the day depends on the age of the child. maddies age is a definate no and even up to 8 or 10 i'd say no. if it was me then maybe11 or 12 when they start high school is more better, long as u know u can trust them

I was raised to know it would be wrong to leave them alone, ever. But in my son's neighborhood there were people who would do this. Not a lot thank goodness but they would put their baby in for a nap and once the baby was asleep the parents would go for a walk. No monitor, nobody home, no nothing.
It leaves my mind numb and unable to really respond.

The parents who leave their kids at home alone while they go out should ask themselves this.
Which is more important, you stomach or the safety of your children!
It's no good saying it will never happen to me, because one day another family is going to get proved wrong!

Community standards vary. We called the police and learned the cut-off age where I live is 12 years old. That was years ago and we never left them alone.

I have a 9 year old daughter and I can honestly say I have never left her ever, I drop her at my mums if we go out without her and pick her back up, on holiday she comes out with us or we dont go, its simple, even if I nip to the shop she comes too and always has, if you want a life where you can go out with no worries of children then dont have them to leave.
