It's a price break for buying in bulk. The difference between wholesale and retail is called the mark up and this mark up is how companies make money when they buy at wholesale prices and sell for retail. In some products there isn't much mark up and some products there is a lot of mark up. Sometimes these numbers come from formulas (price vs sales at that price) designed by the wholesalers and retailers to maximize their profit.

Depends on the product. For jewelry, wholesale is only 10-25% of resale. For food , wholesale is 75-80% of retail. Clothes are somewhere in the middle.
