Is it okay to just throw away CAT5 cables? Is there a special way to dispose of them (like for those energy efficient lightbulbs, for example...) Sources would be excellent! 1st to give clear answer w/source gets best answer!

There's less toxic material in CAT5 cables than some other computer components (mostly just flame retardents). All the same, see if there is a computer recycling center near where you live.

Cat 5 cables don't contain any hazardous materials. So, if they're defective, it's safe to throw them out,

I always keep them, if they work, you never know when you'll need a spare.
