okay Im a smoker, but Im a considerate smoker. I never take more breaks then Im willing to cover. But here is a hint that I gave my sister who also had this problem. Buy yourself a pack of cigarettes, Virginia slims preferably because no one will try to bum one from you. Now people will ask when you started smoking and just tell them youve smoked for awhile just started smoking more recently. When you go outside light the cigarette but you dont really have to take a hit on it since when most people are outside smokeing together they are more or less there to gossip. This will give you the extra breaks that you want. It will also point out to them how annoying it can be to be asked to do something for someone else so frequently. Good luck, and not all smokers are inconsiderate

As a smoker, I step outside periodically during the day, but certainly not every ten minutes. Years ago, we were allowed to smoke where ever, so it wasn't necessary to go outside. You could remain at your desk working and smoking if you felt like it.
The anti-smoking lobby forced through restrictive legislations that relegates the smokers to the outside. In the cold weather and the hot, never a thought to lost productivity. However It only takes about 5 minutes to smoke a cigarette, once an hour over an eight hour period, 40 minutes, if they skip authorized breaks, it's a wash.

I go out for smoke breaks but no more often than every 2 1/2 to 3 hours.
How about people who run to the bathroom every hour for 5 or 10 minutes........should they be fired as well? Or the people who hang out at the water cooler or the coffee bar?

They should only be allowed the same number of breaks everyone else is allowed. Just because they chose to smoke does not mean they get extra special treatment and time off to smoke.
If they take more breaks then they are entitled to, then they should suffer the penalty anyone else would suffer, like being written up and ultimately fired.
I agree with another person, many of the smokers appear to be using smoking as an excuse to be lazy.

I deal with this a lot at my job it's like out of 150 employees about 10 of us don't smoke and those of us that don't tend to socialize more frequently when we get bored instead of smoking. And the smokers always have something to say about me and my friend being in my office talking when we're not busy. And I look at it this way, would you rather me spend a few minutes throughout the day talking to another co-worker, and still working or would you rather me take 30 smoke breaks lasting five minutes or longer throughout the day?

Even if a person smokes there is no reason they should have to go on a smoke break every 10 mins. If they are violating the rules i would tell a manager about it. I used to smoke and I could go at least 2 hours without having a smoke break.

No, they shouldn't be fired.
Venting is good as long as it doesn't harm someone else in the process.
I'm a non-smoker, by the way, and you do make some valid points.
Should a smoker get paid to smoke while the
non-smokers are still busy working? Or should they also have
paid, non-cigarette breaks for non-smokers?
Peace.

Yeah well get a life. I used to smoke, never saw anyone that does take a break every ten minutes. If they are doing their job, what's your problem? Don't be so sensitive-if they complain about covering your lunch, tell them "Oh well". Change jobs. Move to California. Pretty soon the whole state will be a Socialist Republic including no smoking anywhere. I'm not scolding you, just look how immature you sound. Complain to your supervisor even if they smoke.

They should only be allowed to smoke on their normal breaks or lunches. Its not right to take advantage. You could get back at them by hitting the bathroom once an hour or so. Just tell them you have to go and then go sit/stand, whatever in there and make phone calls or read a magazine. But, if you do it a lot, you risk the same rath that could follow them. Good luck.

No they shouldn't be fired, but they shouldn't take more breaks that you take.
We have what, 2 15 minute breaks and an hour lunch? If a smoke is 7 minutes, then if a smoker needs two smoke breaks brofre luncha nd 2 breaks after, then it's cool, as long as they don't take more time than given.
More than likely, they don't like you because you seem to have this "hate smoker" attitude. Or at least that's how it seems to me, so maybe that's why they give you a hard time
But don't start smoking... it stinks!
