I hope I am mistaken. My son in law from Wisconsin hadn't a clue about grits or hushpuppies before he came south to visit. Unfortunately my son ordered his b-i-l some in a restaurant and we didn't butter and salt them up for him. He was a stranger to the delightful flavor of a hushpuppie also. In fact had never heard of them. Do folks across the big pond have any experience on these dining delights.

I KNOW that NO "Self Respecting" Southerner Would EVER Eat (INSTANT) Grits ! ! !

I really do eat grits. It's no different that eating Cream of Wheat.
We love hush puppies with no onions. The best hush puppies I've eaten are in eastern North Carolina. Those things just melt in your mouth and have a sweet flavor to them. We also absolutely love fried green tomatoes. It's our culture, what we were raised on.

Gosh.. ITs so strange that you'd list out two things that I have tried for the VERY FIRST TIME in my whole life just a week and a half ago.
I tried me some grits and loved it. It was plain with some churned butter so i had to season it myself to taste. But it was really good with my eggs and toast.

I went to this " the Clock" burger joint in Charlotte and had me some fish and chips adn i saw this little round ball that looked like a ' timbit' here in Canada from the popular " Tim Hortons" coffeehouse. But it was not anything like it. That little ball was delicious:)

I asked the others what it was and they said' Oh sandy.. thats a hushpuppie".... i was like cool:D
I enjoyed it all.
SOuthern people sure can cook..had me catfish grilled and pan fried, a onion blossom of sorts with a dip..and a baked sweetpotato.. so delicious. Gosh..i'd better stop talking about food so much or i'll get so hungry i could eat a cow.

Can't wait again to visit.

ur sis

I am very familiar with grits and hush puppies, and I live in Az. BUt then again, my family all came from arkansas, and I frew up eating like the hillbillies did.
Hush puppies are great, but still I gotta add a bit o butter on them, yum, nice and warm , all buttered up. Girl you take my home with this one.
Grits.. oh my, yes we still eat them all the time, along with the hush puppies. Grits are best with butter, surgar, salt, canned milk, *true hillbilly form with the canned milk), toss in some bacom bits and yummmmmm. Good eatin'. Tho a bit fattening.
We have grits a lot, especially for breakfast. It fills you up for hours and hours. Good eatin'.
I too am amazed at how many ppl have never heard of or havent tasted those particular southern foods, and assume they will be awful.
Much good food in the south, that so many miss out on. thanks for bringing it to the attention of the ppl across the big pond as you put it. Like that thought. We are all neighbors really. all brothers and sisters in Christ, that want to be,
just seperated by some distance, as its a very big pond.
I love that sentiment. HOME IS WHERE YOUR HEART IS>

Hey, it's hard to find grits out of the southland.

I grew up eating them and still love them to death. Best breakfast is eggs over medium, spicy country sausage and a big pile of grits with a dollop of butter, some salt and lots of pepper.

YUMMY.

We eat grits 2-3 times a week. I don't know why Northerners get their drawers in a uproar over grits; grits are just ground cornmeal, similar to polenta. Salt and sweet cream butter.....yummm.

Love Grits!!! It's definitely a southern thing though. People up north put sugar on them....yuck!!! They are supposed to be salty and buttery! Hush puppies are great too, especially with some fried catfish! YUM!

Ok, well I am across the pond and I've no idea what grits or hushpuppies are in edible form, I'd love to know cos you all seem to think they are tasty.

In the uk we grit paths with little stones and pebbles, and hushpuppies are a brand of very comfortable shoes.

It's not just time differences we have is it? lol x

I am a native Floridian, a real live Florida Cracker. I like grits and hushpuppies. Hate seafood though, which is what you are supposed to eat with hushpuppies, which of course I don't. I eat whatever comes to mind with my hushpuppies.
