See the Klondike Bar Arena would be perfect, it would pay homage to Islay's which created the Klondike a local treat to Pittsburgh before everyone else learned about it. Then Islay's sold it to Giant Eagle(I believe Islay's was bankrupt at the time) and then some other company bought it. Now this all has nothing to do with anything. They have signed the lease and put the ink to paper. That was THIS year though, just a few months back. Nothing wrong with Mellon Arena though, not too many other good names based out of Pittsburgh. I mean Rolling Rock Arena might have been kinda cool before Latrobe Brewing sold it, since we are bringing up beer companies.

The new arena will be called the Mellon arena as well. According to the city of Pittsburgh's website, Mellon Bank is the largest profitable company based in Pittsburgh. The current arena deal extends to any future Pittsburgh home as well, unless both parties agree to break it, and I can't see the penguins forking over what little money they have to do that.

Thanks. I remember reading that the current Mellon deal extended to the new arena, but I didn't know it was for 40 years! Wow! I'll be dead by then!

LITY's right, the Pens just got an extension to their arena deal for like 40 years or something. (You know, when we'll have the oldest arena again and need a new one. Ahhh!) The big ol' Mellon building will be on the same side of the street that the arena is on now.

They have started preparing the land for construction across the street from the current arena.
It is most likely not going to be called mellon arena because Mellon Bank was aquired by the Bank of New York. It's probably going to be something like Alcoa arena or something like that.

It all depends on what company pays the most for naming rights. Usually a locally headquarter company will take it but Heinz and PNC Bank are already taken. Iron City Beer Arena is my vote.

It is so funny I never think of a hockey arena as a stadium. I not trying to be difficult but it just struck my ears wrong.
I like the old school names. Like the saddledome now that it is the Pengrowth Saddledome I think that is funny too.
Call it the Klondike Bar Icecube
