My mother was in a shoppingcenter in Maryland about 3 days ago and they were hanging the Christmas decorations on the lamp posts in the parking lot and the grocery store has Christmas trees on all the registers... Personally it makes me NOT want to shop there... I just don't understand, why so early?

My mother was in a shopping center in MD about 3 days ago and they were hanging Christmas decorations on the lamp posts in the parking lot and the grocery store has Christmas trees on all the registers... Personally it makes me NOT want to shop there... I just don't understand, why so early? I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT THE SHOPPING SEASON- I get the stores want you to spend more money- I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT PURCHASING DECORATIONS i am wondering why they themselves are decorationg for Christmas when it's not Halloween yet...
(I keep picturing children trick or treating in the mall and there are trees and garland everywhere?!?! Perhaps they should set up Santa early too and the kids could trick or treat to him as well!!!)

Stores contract out the people that install decorations. It could be that some are out this early because of demand, or better contract rates.

Why do they have stuff in the stores for sale? Because the "power decorators" need to stock up so they can have time to put out all their lights for Christmas. The day after Thanksgiving is a target date for lighting up. This year, Thanksgiving is early and there are more people interested in decorating for Christmas than ever.

So, in order to allow them sufficient time to purchase the materials they need, plan their display, etc., decoration supplies are out earlier than ever.

In addition, those that purchase Gifts early are through shopping .

I am attaching some links to decorated homes that take a very long time to set up.

Me? I started this past weekend and will light up on December 1st. I think the day after Thanksgiving is too early - you have to let the food digest (at least).

Rushing Christmas has been pushed to the limit, before long they will hang Christmas items up right after July 4th. The reason they do it is because they want you to shop early. Therefore avoiding the last minute shopping rush. The retail businesses are just trying to pay the bills, just as we do. Overtime, utilities, heating and other expenses during the holidays cost big bucks for the retailers. They are just trying to get ahead.

I only like to think of Christmas a week-a week and a half before... Why waste the feeling expecting it? But I understand that it takes time to put up the decorations in a town, not earlier than December 1st, though.

I never knew why retailers rushed Christmas before I started taking economics but there are many reasons why.
#1 By putting Christmas items in stores early, they can make up for losses elsewhere. Chances are,if your in the store buying a necessity, they know you're going to check out the x-mas decs. as long as you're there.
#2 It's good for the economy.Ex. A hairdresser gets off work and goes to the store, buys a christmas item, (thus giving the retailer a profit)the retailer then pays the cashier who in turn takes her money to the hairdresser to get her hair done, which keeps the hairdresser in business. Money goes around in a circle.
#3The earlier you can start shopping for christmas the less likely you are to charge items on credit.
Of course I'm not an expert, but these reasons seem logical to me.

Don't confuse the Christmas SHOPPING Season with the CHRISTMAS Season.

Christmas begins at sunset of Dec 24th and continues for 12 days, ending with 12th Night or Feast of the Magi or Three Kings Day.

Just remember that all those decorations are in preparation for Christmas, not only in celebration of Christmas.

They are trying to psych you into spending big for Christmas. The longer people think about Christmas they figure the more they will spend.

Without Christmas shoppers, the stores would go out of business. Period.
