I don't know about hotels, but I can recommend this hostel. It's called the Flying Pig and it's very famous. Almost every young person who goes to Amsterdam stays at the Flying Pig. You won't find something in the city centre for less money, and it's a perfect hostel. Check out their website.

I went to Amsterdam last year and I stay at Hotel Ibis...It was very clean and nice...The only thing was that I stayed in the one that wasn't so close to everything..It was like a 10min taxi ride away...But there is one that is closer to everything... Amsterdam was definitely a time that I will never forget....

We stayed at the Multatuli. The staff was great. The rooms were small, but comfortable. The price was about 100 Euro per night. It is right across the street from Central Station so the location was ideal! My friend recommend renting an apartment. They did it and they were only there for 3 days.

Try www.hostelworld.com. They include a lot of budget hotels.

I am also looking for the same thing. The closest and the least expensive.
