There is a small amount of rust around the hot water supply line, where the cut off under the sink is. There is a very small leak. I can't afford to call a plumber. Do I have to remove the coupling from the pipe coming from the wall, or can I just wrap it or seal it with some type of plumber's caulk or tape?

You probably wont be able to seal it since it appears its where the coupling is. You can do plumbing yourself with patience and a how to book from library or on line instructions. I certainly did when I was a single mom with no money. Make sure you have all the tools and materials that you need (hardware store people are very helpful in guiding you) and dont forget to turn off the water before you start.

No you can't use any type of caulking, you will need to replace the pipe, because probably the rust has damage the seal inside, and for that you will need a wrench, and maybe a plumber, it all depends is you are handy with tools, but i can tell your not,so probably the best option Will be to call a plumber, o maybe a friend can help you.

Yes, first try to tighten all connections, most often a sudden leak in a drain assembly is caused by someone bumping into the pipes with the trash can or whatever is kept under there. If it turns out to be a cracked pipe, and it truly is PVC (white pipe) replace it with ABS. If you do need to replace it, you can replace only the piece that is actually cracked if it is the tailpiece, extension, etc. If it is part the trap you will have to replace the whole trap. If you have an all-glue trap (the parts are glued, rather than threaded together) all you can do is replace it :( (I strongly suggest you replace with a threaded trap if this is the case) GOOD LUCK :)

You might be able to repair it.
You will need a minimum of two good
wrenches to do so.
If the leak is on the sink side of the cut off,
you might try it.
If on the line side, you must remember that the
pipe may be corroded and require replacement,
which will be beyond your capability.

dont forget to turn water off at mains first and turn tap on to drain.

no you cant seal it with anything the joint has to be removed cleaned with wire wool new plumming pvf tape put on and tightened - however pipes may be corroded or any manner or other things - not rocket science though and worth trying yourself and learning if you have elementary tools
