Yes. I love the things. They are better than beans, and if you like bean dip, you would love black-eyed pea dip! Some people call them black-eyed beans now for some odd reason. Nothing like nice hot cornbread, some greens and black-eyed peas. Nothing heathen about eating. Of course, I grew up in the South, and this was always a tradition here. The fields of black-eyed peas were ignored by Sherman and not destroyed, so that is what southern people had as a main source of food for surviving Confederates. Guess that is why they are supposed to be lucky. The peas represent coins, and the greens paper money.

My mother served black eyed peas and collard greens ever new years eve or day and told me the more I ate the more money I would get during the year. I didn't care for the greens as a child but loved the idea of money so it was a good way to get me to eat em' anyway. (I heard peas is for pocket change and greens for bills)Might be why I have more sense then money....lol:-)

No, our tradition to bring in the new year is to eat oyster stew on New Year's Eve. I think that my be more of a Midwestern thing. I've heard of eating black eyed peas in the South for good luck.

My hubby born in Mass. and lived a while in California as a child is not intothem but I love them. The peas and green represent money and properity for the new year. I wonder what the UK and Oz have as a special meal on these days. Canada, too. Boxing Day is a big holiday for them, too.

Mom always makes spare ribs and kraut.
I do know that black-eye peas are served on holidays down South in a dish called Hop'n John. I've never had it though.
