M= y1-y2/x1-x2

(ps... y=mx+b is the formula for finding the y-intercept)

2007-10-23 03:49:31 · answer #1 · answered by Anonymous · 1 0

the formula for a line is y=mx+b

y is the point that the line passes through on the y or vertical plane.
x is the point it crosses through on the x or horizontal plane
b is the y intercept of the line. The place the line crosses the y axis when x = 0

m is the slope. The gradient of the line that show rise over run, or the change in y divided by the change in x. Show by: (y2 - y1)/(x2 - x1)

Slope = (y2-y1)/(x2-x1), meaning if you have 2 points to form a line..you can devide the difference of y and x between two points. It is the tangent of the line formed by that two points.

Rise over run.
That's what slope is. To figure the slope of a line it's y=mx+b

if you have a function y the slope is the first derivative at the point

ex y=x^2 at point x=1
the derivative dy/dx = 2x^2 at point 1 dy/dx= 2
