My husband and I have been trying to choose a baby name (girl) that we both like. I love the name Riley for a girl and he wants the baby to have my middle name Michelle and while he likes the name Riley, he wants a different spelling of it because he says that R-I-L-E-Y seems like a boyish spelling. What do you think of the name and do you think we should use an alternate spelling?

Riley is definitely all girl. Especially with the Riley spelling. R-I-L-E-Y and G-I-R-L. It looks all girl also. I would only use the Riley spelling. The others look made up to me. Riley is like the name Kelly. A great irish name that started out as a surname, tried out on boys and then became a girls name and is predominately used by girls. And as with Kelly, most people like this spelling and use it, not the Kelli or Kellie.

Some other Riley's that use this spelling are Riley Keough, Elvis's grand-daughter and Howie Mandel's daughter. It's by far the spelling most girl's use and I think it looks the best also. There is also a cartoon on Disney called The Replacements where a main character's name is Riley. And they use the Riley spelling for her also.

I think Riley Michelle sounds very pretty. Best of luck with your daughter!

being different is great. I think having a different spelling is definately unique and R-I-L-E-Y spelling is a little bit boyish so I think an alternate spelling would be a good idea here are some thoughts:

Rylee Michelle
Rylie Michelle

I love it (sounds great w/ Michelle too) and would leave it the way you have it. Otherwise, everyone will be messing it up (either written or pronouncing) as she grows up. It doesn't look like a boys name w/ that spelling.

I like the name, but I would use an alternate spelling. Maybe I'm biased, though, since my friend named her son R-i-l-e-y a year ago.

How about Rylee?

Kaylee, Kellee, Carlee... ee seems to give off a feminine tone. I would go with Rylee Michelle. It is such a cute name! Congratulations!

It's a very cute name! You could try Rylee or Rylie, they're a bit more feminine spellings.
