Hirohito, while the "God Emperor" to the Japanese people, in reality held very little power during the 2nd World War. The country, and the war, were actually run by the militarists under Tojo.
Hirohito's main contribution was in allowing his name to be used to justify to the Japanese people the aggressions and atrocities performed in his name. The Japanese, for years, had been indoctrinated in the "Code of Bushido", which, among other things, required the people to submit to unquestioning loyalty to the emperor. While he remained essentially on the sidelines, the militarist government used his name to carry out their war plans in China, Manchuria, SE Asia, and the Pacific islands.
One additional fact - Hirohito had never spoken directly to the Japanese people. All communications came from others in the 'name of the Emperor'. Had he decided to go on the radio and tell the people to do something different, they would have. But this wasn't in keeping with tradition, and the rest is history. He did in fact make a public statement at the end of the war, asking his people to lay down their arms and accept the occupation, and that was the first time most Japanese had ever heard his voice.

Go to a search engine, type in World War II. Start reading and dont stop until youre dead. You'll know a sizeable portion of the general knowledge of WWII. Books to read: War Without Mercy is a good book Dr. Seuss Goes to War Oxford History of WWII Chronology of WWII Dresden Mein Kampf tons of others-this is an insanely basic starting point. Use answers for more detailed questions, there is just no way to answer you. Documents to find: RAF memos declassified within the last 10 years

His major accomplishment was his ability to keep his name out of it and dump ALL the responsibility on his Generals.
He WAS an accomplished botanist and marine scientist. Maybe he could have put his brain to better uses.

He was sort of like a hood ornament on a pimpmobile; but he was smart enough to get through the war alive.
