There are 4 division in each conference (AFC and NFC). The four division winners each get a playoff spot. Then there are 2 wild card teams from each conference. Those wild cards are based on record and can come from any of the 4 divisions. That makes a total of 12 teams in the playoffs.

Division champs plus two teams with best record make the wild card in each conference.

Since there are 4 divisions per conference, that would make 8 division champs. Plus another 4 wild cards (two per conference).

Kinda straightforward until the tiebreakers get involved.

6 teams from each conferance.

They are made up of the 4 division winners, plus 2 wild card teams. The wild card teams are simply the next teams with best records.

When tie breakers get involved it gets very confusing.

Whatever team has the best record in each division gets in, then the two teams with the next best records get in as wildcards.

As far as I understand it, The team with the best record in the AFC and the team with the best record in the NFC are guaranteed a playoff berth. Then the next two teams in both divisions with the nbest records also get a playoff spot. That leaves the last two spots down to wild cards, one AFC and one NFC.
