I knew there was a reason I don't watch those shows Thanks for pinpointing it for me! I have never seen a 'reality' show...I have enough reality in my own life thank you! I also have a 13 year old boy, so I don't have anything like that on my computer either & I block the daylights out of his web surfing!! My voyerism is confined to my bedroom!

Wow dude. I believe I have the solution for you. In fact, I believe that every TV has the solution for you.
Its called the "Off" button.
And what's the difference between reality TV, where "people accept a tremendous amount of lying and actually seem to appreciate it and accept it" as you put it, and this website right here? Do you really think all the "BUsh is SATaN???? Yes or nO????" questions are, as the saying goes, for realzz?

For the first time in the history of our species, copulation can serve you with a death sentence. Even if sex with someone doesn't give you HIV or AIDS, it can lead to OTHER nasty little surprises, such as HPV (warts), chlamydia, herpes, gonnorhea, and something so nasty it's referred to as the "Black Syph", a strain of syphillis so mutated over the years, penicillian has no effect on it whatsoever.
All this produces a paranoia and a dread fascination with sex psychologists refer to as, "Aversion/compulsion".
Enter the voyeur.
The voyeur can indulge in almost any or every fantasy he or she can afford, with the new digital age. It is solitary, it is lonely, it is self correcting on a species level, (as paranoid voyeurs rarely preocreate), but it is SAFE.
They may die alone, but it won't be with their johnsons rotting off.
And I think your comparison to reality TV is way off. It is basic human drama to empathize for other humans in jeopardy (whether in real life or fictional), but reality TV BEGAN as "reality", the genret has morphed over the past 6 years into what are generally accepted as "unscripted drama" shows, QUITE a bit different from reality shows.
And the reason for their proliferation can be summed up easily: They are popular and they are dirt cheap to produce, relatively speaking.

Just my opinion and a lot of observation on YA. Americans have realized the fact of social diseases/aids in intimacy so have gone to masturbation/self satisfaction and the porn gives a mental as well as visual stimulation for this. Also--monkey see--monkey do. Everyone else is doing it and it feels good--so it has become an addiction of sorts.

It just proves that Freud was right. It's all about sex. Even religion is all about sexual behavior, even if the godfreaks have forgotten.

It's not that it's more popular today, it's that it is more available.

Because America is a sexually suppressed nation. And sexual suppression usually turns into sexual perversion.
