The purpose of trying to gain control of Iraq’s oil is not to give out free oil and gas but to make higher profits for the oil companies. Controlling more of the source allows the oil companies to have more control of the prices. Saddam was acting up, manipulating the market, changing to petroeuros, threatening to do worse once the sanctions were lifted and, in general, upsetting the oil companies.

We don't own the oil. Oil companies are trying to force contracts with the Iraq government so they can sell it back to us. Of course this is backed by our current administration, this has been devastating in resolving issues in Iraq.
It is not too hard to see, just read between the lines, no media will jump out and tell you.

Okay, terrible question. But first off, was the removal of Saddam from power a bad thing? You want free gas? I didn't know that we were harvesting gas in Iraq? What kind of gas by the way? Methane? Argon? I think we are more intrested in OIL, not gas.
So I assume you mean free gasoline. So you think all petrol stations should start selling their products for free because you are lazy and ignorant? What about the truckers who haul it? And the tankers that ship it? They all need to work for you, the lazy ignorant American.

The Iraq oil law hasn't been signed yet. If the U.S. oil companies get their way and the Iraqis abandon their Constitution (which socialized their oil), you'll see cheaper oil but it still won't be free. Western oil companies are in the business of redistributing wealth from the second and third worlds to the aristocracy in the first world. Free oil doesn't accomplish that.
The only thing we've gotten so far is a slower fall in the dollar than we would've if Saddam had been able to succeed in his plan to sell Iraqi oil for Euros. One of Paul Bremer's first acts as Coalition Provisional Authority head was to mandate that all Iraq oil transactions were henceforth to occur in dollars.

The U.S. doesn't own Iraqi oil. U.S. oil companies own the rights to Iraqi oil. U.S. oil comapnies are not the people, though some of the people own stock in U.S. oil companies. That is why gas prices are rising.

man you are out of it. you thought the oil was supposed to be for you? get real. we get most of our oil from canada and mexico, which are a lot closer to home. that iraqi oil is being sold to the highest bidder. they pay a heck of a lot more in other countries. let me repeat, the oil is not for you. it's for the guys that put this deal together. these guys are into profit.
