STOP! ... Sponge Bob Square pants is the coolest cat this side of "Bikin Bottom" and I was seriously not aware of these rumblings, so thank you for bringing it to my attention. My boys love... absolutely LOVE Sponge Bob, so I feel oblugated to add my two cents.
Sponge Bob is NOT gay OR straight for that matter. Rather, Mr. Square Pants exists in a world where sex and sexuality does not come into play at all -it simply does not exist. I mean... SERIOUSLY -lets hope our culture can leave this innocent, and hilarious cartoon character out of our collective gutter mind...
What Sponge Bob is, is a man, or I'm sorry, a sponge of duty and commitment. He is committed to his friends, and job like no other. He's got an incredible work ethic, he's creative, and an all around positive, upbeat character with an awesome imagination and a killer sense of humor.
He's the most popular character in my house, and man, I really, really hope some gutter mind ninkompoops don't make me have to pre-maturely explain homosexuality to my four year old through rumors about his beloved Sponge Bob...

Its possible. I think that one episode you mention was suspect but I'm going to have to go out on a limb and say nahhhhh, it's just a cartoon without innuendo. But can sponges be gay? Sponges can reproduce sexually or asexually. They can reproduce asexually by the process of budding, internal and external. External budding occurs when the parent sponge grows a bud on the outside of its body that can either break away or stay connected. Internal budding is when archaeocytes collect in the mesophyl and become surrounded by spongin. The internal bud is called a Gemmeule. An asexually reproduced sponge has exactly the same genetic material as the parent. Sponges can also perform external sexual reproduction. Although sponges are hermaphroditic (both male and female), they do not fertilize their own eggs with their own sperm, as this would be asexual reproduction. Instead, all sponges of a certain species release their eggs and sperm on a certain night, generally the full moon, and they fertilize each other in the water, producing offspring different from either parent. Therefore, I think that sponges would have no desire to be gay...if they had the ability to desire.

I think he is gay. My mother loves spongebob. She doesn't watch the shows, she just likes all of his decorations and toys, and comforters, and so forth. She has a guest room that has nothng but spongebob decorated everywhere. Actually, she's the one that mentioned spongebob was probably gay even though she likes his decorations. I thought that was so funny!!! He does show some tendicies.

I don't know and don't care. Sponge Bob is a super little dude! He's honest and a good friend. Gay or not I'd have him in my corner. P.S. I saw that episode.....I thought it was crazy cool.

I'd love him regardless of his sexual orientation anyway!
The fact that he loved the clam and was willing to give it some love with the help of his best friend makes him even more lovable!!!!!

I think he's like that friend I had growing up who really thought that he was straight but everyone around him knew he was gay ... Spongebob just hasn't figured it out yet!
