DIWALI is called NARAKA CHATHURDASI -

When we inquire into the significance of the Deepavali festival which we are celebrating , we find that traditionally it is a joyous festival to celebrate the destruction of the demon Narakasura, a powerful king of Assamby Sri Krishna. It is only when we first understand the meaning of the Krishna Principle will we be able to understand the significance of the Naraka principle. Krishna is the embodiment of the Five Elements: ether, air, fire, water and earth. He is also the embodiment of five life breaths--Prana, Apana, Samana, Udana and Vyana. "Kleem-Krishnaaya-Govindaaya-Gopijanavallabhaaya Swaah." This mantra contains the essence of the Bhagavatha. The five names represent the Five Pranas (vital airs). Kleem refers to the earth. Krishnaaya refers to water. Govindaaya refers to Agni (the Fire-God). Gopijanavallabhaaya refers to Vayu (Air). Swaah refers to ether.

When we recognize that the Divine is immanent in the five elements, we will realize that there is no place in the cosmos where these five are not present. The human body is composed of the five elements. These elements, because they constitute the body, can affect only the body but cannot affect the Atma in any way.

Krishna's encounter with the demon Naraka has to be understood against this background. "Nara-ka" means one who is opposed to the Atma. The celebration of Deepavali as the day of deliverance from Narakasura commemorates Krishna's victory. The day is observed as an occasion when the Divine leads mankind from darkness to light.

The legendary version of the Narakasura episode describes the demon as master of Praagjyothishapura. The symbolic meaning of Praagjyothishapura is that it is a place which has forgotten the Atma. The inner meaning of this is that demonic forces dwell in any place where the Atma is forgotten. All the chaos and evil in the world today are due to the fact that men have forgotten the Atma (the Supreme Spirit). Every man is conscious of the body and of the individual soul, but is not conscious of the Paramatma (Divinity) within him.

On Deepavali day, we light numerous lamps with one candle. The light with which other lamps are lit is a Symbol of the Divine. The other lamps are Jivanajyothis (individual lamps). They derive their light from the One Supreme Light. It is to teach this truth to men that the Festival of Lights is observed. -

Narakasura was a cruel king that he ruled his kingdom very cruelly and he tortured the people of his kingdom extremely. Then the people went to Lord Krishna and explained their problems. They asked for help and Krishna promised them that he would save them.
But Narakasura had got a boon that he cannot be killed by any men, bird, animal etc.On knowing this fact Krishna identified a secret that Narakasura can be killed by a woman only. So he created an intention of war in the heart of Satyabhama, his beloved wife.
Then Satyabhama along with Krishna went to fight with Narakasura. There Krishna acts as if he went into trance after a huge fight. Then Satyabhama enters into the fight and killed Narakasura.(Satyabhama is the avatar of Bhoomatha, who is the mother of Narakasura).
The death day of Narakasura is being celebrated as Narakachaturdasi and the next day as Deewali.
So people have been celebrating Deewali since then, as they have seen the light in their lives after the death of Narakasura.

It was the day of victory over "Narakasur", the asur or demon .
Andhra:
God Yama is worshipped on this day to get over the fear of demon Narakasura. Lamps with four wicks are lighted at various places. People make an effigy of Narakasura, carry it to the outskirts, and burn it. Later, they take bath and burst crackers. This is the day of Narakasura's death and hence a celebration for all. The story goes as follows:

It is believed that on Amavasya (no moon day), Goddess Lakshmi is present in sesame oil, and Gangadevi is present in all wells, lakes, and ponds. Sesame oil is used for taking bath. Plants like Uttarani, Anapa and Prapunnatamu are circled around the head before taking bath. Yama is worshipped facing South. It is believed that this helps in combating untimely death and in giving peace to the departed souls. In the evening, lamps are lightened almost everywhere in the town including the temples, hills, graveyards, etc.

In the olden days, kings used to supervise the festivities during the nights. Black gram leaves are eaten today. Lamps are distributed. Late in the night, women bring out their household weapons like dustpans, mops, etc, to drive away ‘Jyesthadevi’, (goddess of penury). Deepavali was once called as ‘Kaumudi Mahostavam’.

It is a dark day, when ghosts are supposed to move around.
