I keep seeing these 1000 plus pound pumpkins on TV and I wonder if that's a genetic thing (like the kind of pumpkin they are) or if it's a matter of something the farmer is doing (like special food or soil or something).

they start out with seed from a large variety of pumpkin... then they wait until the vines have set fruit and then choose the most likely canidate for huge-ness and remove all the fruit BUT it.... then they feed and water consistently to keep it growing....
