Because tears are hard to fake. And thus: showing people that what you feel is real. The same with certain muscles around your eyes, some are impossible to control without strong emotions. Actors have a hard time trying to feel the way their character feels.
By laughing and crying, you can let people know how you feel and show that you're more reliable than those who fake. Because you show that you're reliable, it has a clear function in evolution. Evolutionary psychology does a lot with emotions. The idea is that every emotion is very necessary to survive and find good partners, or was at least very necessary during pleistocene.

I sit here late at night
Thinking, wondering why
Why I have all this pain
Wondering why I want to die
I don’t know where it comes from
It’s just always been there
I think it’s from my childhood
Which brings pain I can not bear
Or maybe it’s from now
All these growing things
Wondering if I’ll ever have children
Ya know, the stuff life brings
Maybe it’s all this worrying
About the future and past
Thinking what I should have done
Wondering if I’ll last
Maybe it’s when my mom left
My dad when I was five
I had no clue where she was
If she was dead or alive
I think that’s where it comes from
All this pain I have and had
Having to live all those years
Only with my dad
I hope time heals all my pain
Cause if it doesn’t I’ll die
I hope, for once I’ll be truly happy
And for once, cry a happy cry

When u r too happy or too dipressed u tend to lose control over ur emotions and body for a few fraction of seconds. Tears is just a way of out flow of feelling. Not necessarily tears i have seen people react strangly at times. The point is U have no control over ur emotions at those times.

If you're in touch with you're emotions more often and not afraid to show them you would probably "tear up" a few times a day, whenever experiencing strong emotions. Love, anger, frustration, or happiness. As it is, most people hardly let themselves cry at all. Even when it is needed. Just a theory.

Personally when my husband returned from being in Iraq I cried it was from joy and relief. I cry every time he comes home because I'm happy he made it back to us. It's tears of joy ...joy and sadness are two extreme emotions and crying is just a normal response.

It's because you are overrun by your emotions and you express it by tears of joy. It's an overwhelming feeling of joy normally because of disbelief that that event can really happen to you.

I think that crying is the quickest and safest way to release emotions, no matter how you are feeling, sad, happy, angry....its least stressful on the body.

you will cry cause it is joy and your body is trying to keep it out but the pain of joy is so overwelming that your body starts to produce tears
