For a boy I would suggest any of Scott Westerfeld's stories including Peeps, Uglies/Pretties/Specials/Extras, The Midnighters Trilogy and So Yesterday. These are a combination of fantasy, urban fantasy and contemporary/social stories.

For a girl I would suggest Twilight by Stephenie Meyer or Hawksong by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes if she is in to fantasy or if she likes more realistic stories I would suggest Dairy Queen and The Off Season by Catherine Murdock.

I've read all the books suggested and thought they were all very good.

The teenage years really are the time we decide the rest of our life. Because of the pivotal effect a certain philosophy can have in your life at this time, I would suggest you study philosophy, beginning with the classics. Aristole, Plato, Zeno, Epicurus, etc. and maybe some modern philosophers like Kant, Marx, and Rand.

I doubt you will take my advice, but there it is.
