We had our furnace replaced last year and the installer disconnected all the smoke detectors before he turned on the furnace for the first time. He said that oils used in the manufacturing process would set off the alarms. There was an acrid smell for the first little while. It went away in about 30 minutes and we have not had a problem.

I would be guessing there is something wrong with the gas line(if its gas), something has fallen into it, or there is dust trapped in it if it had not been used much by the people before you. You will just have to not use it and wait until you can get someone to come around and take a look at it. If its winter where you live and you really want a heater while you wait, just buy a small portable one that is cheap, otherwise you will just have to wait and hope you can get someone to take a look at it soon.
Its probably not a good idea to do something about it yourself unless you know what your doing.

I would normally put this down to dust that has built up over time but judging by the amount of smoke it would seem that something has possibly fallen into the heater and melted. I would try to gain access to the elements to look for any signs of melting or burning. If it is still a mystery then consider replacing the heater to save any possible problems in the future

Most likely there was some construction residue on the heating coils of the furnace. It happens every year when the furnace turns on for the first time. Usually burning off the dust on the coils that has accumulated over the summer. Not to worry, happens every year.

just a thought, there might have been a bit of plastic of something that should of been removed that got burned off. to be safe i would have the heater inspected by a qualified person. it could of also been the chimney pipes...they are sometime coated with an anti rust material that smell when they are first used. if you have electric heal, maybe a piece of plastic got onto the heating elements
