Isn't it unfair that only women has to adopt the husband's family name?

I know some people has a terible family name, Imagine you are Gaylord Focker... wouldn't it be nice if you can just adopt your new spouse's family name so you don't have to do with the legalities of changing family names?

And does the philippine Law favors men when it comes to nuptials so that only the women will change their name?

Tell me your opinion on this matter!!!

WOW! my ignorance!!! I was not aware of any man who adapted to the wifes family name. I was curious because my I don't know anyone who has adopted his wife's family name as a gift to her family.

That would, I think, be noble especially if the wife does not have any brother to pass their family's name.

In most patriarchal societies, the husband is rated as the 'head of his family' - and that was how, the wife was made to adopt her husband's family surname, when she got married.
But, nowadays, several married career women still stick to their maiden names - because they are a lot better known by these. However, I am personally yet to come across even a single man who adopted his wife's surname !
...It may surprise many, to learn that there are a few matriarchal communities in Kerala, India - where only the daughters inherit their mothers' property, while the husband [if he does not have a job of his own] has to simply live depending on his wife's generosity !
But, as it is not the custom to have a family surname in these communities, the question of any name-change hardly ever arises !

Men can adopt their new spouse's name if they so wish. But women don't have to adopt their new husband's. My sister-in-law didn't when she and my brother got married two years ago. She didn't want to go through the hassle of changing all the documents.

Men can, there is no law prohibiting them, but since men are considered head of the family generally women will adopt the husbands family name.

When i first got married me and my husband decided that i will keep my last name, 2 months later i decided to add my husbands last name after my family name, but it's to long to write so i drop my family name and instead use my husbands last name.

Is it a Law? Or just customary...

I know Americans are free toname themselves as they wish, so long as the intention is not fraudulent..

I knew a guy once who chose to hyphenate his and his wife's name. They both took the other's name.
