I think parrots are the most clever. :)

It is not true that parrots are just mimics... both small and large species can be taught to speak 'in context'. They learn to associate words with objects, emotions, actions, etc, and use these appropriately.
A lot of the things they learn are merely from observation where the owner wasn't even trying to teach them.

They also are known to make up their own words from words they already know to describe things. Some real life examples from African Grey parrots are 'cork nut' for an almond, and 'pretty smelling medicine' for aromatherapy.

They are the only known animal besides humans that can add up to 6.

Some species of parrots give each one of their chicks plus their mate individual names.

Parrots can be trick trained. They can fetch, roll over, come, step up, do a flip, ride a mini bicycle... the list goes on.

Parrots, especially cockatoos, can pick padlocks and other locks faster than any human and open their own cages.

The most clever of the parrot species is the African Grey Parrot. I don't own one, but I do own 6 parrots... a rainbow lorikeet, 3 cockatiels, a Bourke's parakeet, and a turquoise parakeet.

Many pets can be very smart and cunning. So, it be hard to say which is most clever. Depends on what they want. I have seen birds learn how o open their cage to get out. I come home and they be on top of the cage whistling; "Happy Trails". I did have a Raccoon once, they clever but it a mischievous way. Had a cat that had this play toy ball with a bell in it. He only play with it at night when I try to sleep. I got it one night and put it away. After that, he hear me coming at night to get it and he would hide the ball until I went to bed. He would Meow the; "Catch me if you can song". The list goes on. But, for myself, I guessing the Bird was most clever when I look at what all it would do.

In my opinion, ferrets!! Anyone that has/had ferrets knows what I'm talking about. =) And, yes, I have ferrets - five of them actually. Those little sneaks are so small, that they can fit into places most animals can't (my one can even go under closed doors!). Their paws are designed in a way that allows them to pull open doors (that aren't shut tight), cupboards, and drawers. They're great climbers and can climb up to high places to get to things they shouldn't. They're just very clever, although I (lovingly) prefer the term 'BAD!' LOL I've also heard that they can be trained to run wires and cables through tiny places that people can't get to and they've been used to chase rabbits out of burrows.

From my experience, primates. I do not own one, but I have yet to meet one whose keeper didn't have a story of it managing to pick a lock or figure out various ways to get something that was hidden.
Pigs are also extremely smart, rising above dogs.

My own pet experience has been with parrots. I had a cockatoo that took the bolts off of her cage doors and hid them from us in her food and litter, and threw them into corners on the floor and behind drapes.

I think cats are. One day i was torturing my cat, when i was little, and he bite me in the face and made me bleed, and i was crying, and i went to go lay down, and he came up on the other side of the bed. Then when i woke up (cuz i fell asleep) he was right by my stomach curled up in a ball. He knew he did something wrong, and i new he was trying to say sorry. Also its fun to shine a light and the wall and watch them try to get it!! =D but right now i have a hamster, and i taught her how to jump, and she can climb really well, and she comes when i call her name, and she can stand on two legs when i show her a peanut.

I have mules and my show mule is the einstein of equines. I have never seen something sit there and study a gate to see if he could jump it, lay down and squirm under it, how a latch works you name it. He is a thinking machine which keeps me on my toes.

My sons mule has successfully learned how to open up a chest freezers lock and get to treats inside.

Dogs would be my 2nd guess, but mules in my life are the brainiacs.

I guess that primates are the closest to humans but they don't have the ability to reason. The most clever animals are (of course) humans!

As far as pets go, I am biased toward cats. Think of those cats who travel thousands of miles to find their families when they've moved. That in and of itself is pretty amazing. They are tough and survivors (9 lives?) as well as independent. I swear I can see them think sometimes (I know...I'm anthropomorphizing!). They are superlative hunters who plan strategies when hunting in order to get the "prize." Yes, I admit I'm biased, but I think it's based on solid information!!

BTW, I don't own cats- I think they own me, LOL!! : )

I think cat's are pretty smart. My cat know exactly what time I have to get up every morning. I don't even need an alarm clock.
