you'll have to go to either Tucson or Flagstaff and catch a train from there. Have you considered flying?

There is no train station in Phoenix. First of all go to www.amtrak.com and see if there is a line from "Flagstaff" to Denver. Once you have the correct information and the horribly expensive cost book your ticket...now hop in a car and drive to Flagstaff, or to get there faster and cheaper go to www.southwestairlines.com!

Phoenix is the biggest city in the U S without train service.

As others have said here, you could fly, drive, or get to Flagstaff or Tucson and then catch a train. Another option would be Greyhound.

Flying is by far the quicker and cheaper option, you can fly direct from Sky Harbor to Denver International for a around $150 round-trip.

To actually go from Phoenix to Denver by train you would follow this convoluted and very costly route:
1. take a bus to either Tucson, or Flagstaff
2. take the train to Los Angeles,
3. take another train to San Francisco,
4. take a bus to Emeryville, California
5. take another train to Cheyenne, Wyoming
6. take another bus to Denver.

You can't. Trains don't run in the west like they back east. your options are bus (if you have to stay on the ground) or fly (which will probably be cheaper). SWA or US Air (formally America West) are probably the best.
