The 1848 war when the US took over half their territory and invaded their capital. This single event marked and scarred the country's psyche until today. Before that, they were a young optimistic democracy, after, they became fearful, resented against the US, and always living in the past, as if all past times were better, a defeatist attitude most people carry on until the 21st century thanks to the obsolete history lessons taught at Mexican public schools.
