It sholuld be where you insert Express memory Cards. Data is transferred between the laptop and card via a technology called PCI Express. It is almost as fast as SATA hard disks but more expensive.

That slot is a PCMCIA slot where you can attach several peripherals such as a wireless internet receiver. It acts a PCI slot on a desktop pc, where a laptop is more compact and the only way to expand it using a peripheral hardware is through this PCMCIA slot.

You put express cards in it.

In all likelihood you'll probably never end up using it since pretty much everything you'll need is built into a modern laptop.
