There are many possibilities. It depends on whether you mean just batting or all-round:-
YUVRAJ Singh, Jacques Kallis, AB de Villiers, MS Dhoni, Kevin Pietersen, Sanath Jayasuriya, Mahela Jayawardene, Adam Gilchrist, SACHIN TENDULKAR, Robin Uthappa (rising star), Sourav GANGULY etc.
It is hard to pick one out!!

I suppose you mean "who" is the best batsman, not "how". But for godness sake, why pose a question then answer it yourself by saying Ponting is NOT the best. You are of Indian nationality, so I guess you are typically subjective on this matter and want people to nominate an Indian batsman, but I think all the Indian team are pretenders - good at the tip and giggle of limited over games, but pathetic at the REAL stuff - test match cricket. Best batsman in the world - RICKY PONTING! (so bad luck pal).

Why ask for our opinion and then you just rule out one of the front runners !! sounds like you might be a bit biased !!
There are many good batsmen around just now , with one or two getting towards the end of their career e.g Sachin Tendulkar who has a fantastic record in scoring big hundreds . There are some flashy players around like Kevin Peterson who when they come off are great to watch , but would you really want them in your team if your life depended on a team performance ??
Kallis has burst back on the scene , and is obviously a very good player .
But I am sorry , on current form I have to edge for Pointing who can put anchors down when the situation demands , and is free scoring when required
By the way I am not Australian !!

Well you have your mind made up that it's not Ponting. So I won't say him. He's in the top few. As is Tendulkar but let's keep him out of it too if you want Ponting out!
Looking at consistency, performances when they count, strength of personality (just in the tough spots). I'd give you a list of a few that I couldn't pick between:
Mike Hussey
VVS Laxman
Kevin Pietersen (but a bit inconsistent)
Matthew Hayden
MS Dhoni (though I've only seen him a few times and I want to see how he goes on the bouncy Australian pitches before I give him the nod as a real talent)

Mate look at the stats. Ricky Ponting is by far the best batsmen in both forms of the game. But since you are obviously against australians id say mohammed yousef from pakistan or Mahayla Jawardena from Sri Lanka

Well the two class acts are Lara and Tendulkar but they are at the ends of their careers. I'm afraid Ponting looks to me be the next best and he will probably overtake them.
I like watching Kevin Pietersen and the most underrated are Shiv Chanderpaul.and Mahela Jayawardene. Incidentally as far as domestic cricket goes amol muzumdar is good but Mark Ramprakash is much better.

In tests it's Mohammed Yousuf the second best batsman after Ponting and in ODI's its Andrew Symonds the best batsman after Ponting.
