Sorry if this is a silly question, I think I might just need to use a browser or an ftp program. Basically, I keep stumbling accross links to ftp addresses where I'm to download program resources I'm after, but it's not obvious to me how to use them. Do I need to be using an FTP program, am I missing something really obvious. Here's a link to an example page incase you dont know what I mean:

ftp://ftp-linux.cc.gatech.edu/pub/linux/distributions/debian/

Can anyone show me what I'm misunderstanding?

Thanks

Well, it will work with just your browser.

In the page you link to there are several browser readable files, they will just simply OPEN with your browser.
Those marked with a paper symbol will just open. (Like Readme) Those that show a folder are just that, other folders. Navigate them just as you would by using "My Computer" to navigate your local machine.

Go to the "Dist" folder. You will see several more folders.
Click on the "distribution you want" like the one named "sarge" ftp://ftp-linux.cc.gatech.edu/pub/linux/distributions/debian/dists/sarge
in that folder you will see other types of files.
Those marked with .gz are the downloadable files! If you click on one your browser will start to download that file. You will also see even more folders that you may have to get to in order to find the file you want.
You can use and FTP program as well to login to the system. You still have to "navigate" to the correct folder and file you want to download but with FTP program ALL files will download none will display.
It will help you greatly if you know what file and what directory but you can browser the folders in a browser until you find it!

I will tell you, the directory you picked is to mostly BINARY installations (you picked a HARD one to start learning from!)

If you are using linux and using ssh, you need to first find the directory and file name then use "get" to download the file you want but you have to give the FULL directory path and folder and filename! (Or you can use FTP from the command line to do the same thing - you will have to login to see those files.)

Hope that Helps and good luck!

Usually you can just click on the file and it will download just like a regular HTTP link. You can also use an FTP program, which has more features than a mere internet browser, but it's not absolutely necessary.

My favorite is RightFTP, which is by far the best free FTP client I've used...

Your not misunderstanding much. You are right.

The easiest way to download files like that is to get yourself a download manager. Google "DAP".. and install that.

cheers
