If you're looking for all-female hard rock/metal bands, check out Kittie first off. I don't necessarily recommend them (kinda boring instrumentally and lyrically drone...), but they're a good place to start.
Hole was (is?) fronted by Courtney Love (who was married to Nirvana's Kurt Cobain), and the girls in that band are pretty damn good at what they do, even though I'm not a Love fan. You'd know them best for "Celebrity Skin".
Heart is one of the greats for female bands. I feel that they are some of the most talented women in the business, and they put on a great live show as well. Not just singing and thrashing about, but well-composed songs that, if anything, are a little sappy at times.
As far as awesome rock chicks go, here are a few more that stand out in a crowd but are in bands with men:
Stevie Nicks (and Christie McVie I guess, why not) from Fleetwood Mac...AMAZING vocals from Nicks and though Fleetwood Mac wouldn't really be classified as hard rock (especially in today's standards), she's someone to look to for good music.
Shirley Manson from Garbage. I don't know what it is about this girl, but I've never had a single complaint about her musically. She's DEFINITELY up there in awesome rock girls.
Otep! Nuff said.
Lita Ford is another to check out...as is Pat Benetar. Benetar was actually trained in classical vocals (read: opera) before she became a rock sensation ("Love is a Battlefield", for one)
Joan Jett and the Blackhearts ("I love Rock and Roll")...
Also, check out D'Arcy....she used to be the bassist for Smashing Pumpkins. Awesome girl.
I'd ignore Evanesence (spelling?) entirely. A waste of creative energy, as far as I'm concerned...and the girls voice is annoying. I'm ignoring The Donnas as well, because like 4 non-blondes, the GoGos and the Bangles, they just don't feel like rock to me. Kinda lame.
Oh! And don't forget Janis Joplin (can also be found under Big Brother and the Holding Company).
Wow...sorry I kinda rambled...weird coming from someone that isn't really into female singers...but yeah, hardest all female bands would be Kittie or Hole, and singers from mixed bands are Shirley Manson (deep voice for a girl) and Otep.
Good luck - hope you find what you're looking for.

The one and only Runaways. Joan Jett, Lita Ford, Michael Steele and others were the originators. And Joan Jett is the hardest rocking woman in the world. Check out the song Fetish!

"Rock Goddess"
A heavy metal female band from the early eighties that I used to see play at the Marquee club when it was located in Wardour Street, Soho, London, England.
They were hot and hard.

Dover, from Madrid, are pretty damned hard and the sisters play the guitars.
If Stevie Nicks ever does amazing vocals, it's not Stevie Nicks. She sounds like a bleating lost lamb calling for mommy.
