Well to be fair now. I'm Irish, and no, I'm not just taking advantage of taking a dig at the English. But when I think of WWII I always think of America Vs Germany and Japan. You kind of forget about the English contribution. That's just based on all the movies you see in the cinema and video games you play growing up in these times now.

As an American I except your argument and for the sake of this discussion would be proud to be included in the British empire. After all except for a number of years after the revolution the United States and Great Britain have been joined at the waist. Movies, television, aviation, electricity and heavy industry in Britain and the U.S. electrified the world, and defined what it meant to be a modern country throughout the developing world. The jet engine and the computer were developed in Great Britain during the second world war.
.
The vast British Empire and the centralized communications and government that it represented a huge advantage when fighting a world war of several fronts. The United States and Australia along with elements of the British Empire used their superior knowledge and expertise in the far East to turn back Japanese expansionism. In Europe, Britain, the United States and all the members of the British Commonwealth and the British empire defeated an evil so vile that it is still amazing that it happened in what is considered to be an enlightened and modern age.
.
World War ll cost Great Britain dearly. The loss of manpower and damage to it's cities, it's economy and granting independence to most of the empire in my opinion set Great Britain back 30 or 40 years.

I happen to be first generation American but am of Polish ancestry. I was in the Army ten years, two tours in 'Nam. I can proudly say I fought next to the Australians in 'Nam and learned to love them as brothers.
My father fought across Europe, I wouldn't go as far to say the Brits beat the Germans by themselves, they had a lot of help both from our men, who weren't sitting on their thumbs and the American industry in the form of Planes, tanks, Etc. the British in WW2 were beaten, it's history now.
I'll not trade insults, England has always stood shoulder to shoulder with America.
Right now what's happening in the middle East is far beyond my thinking. My grandson has been there for three years, we want him home.
I can only think of the horror that will become the world if Iran decides to pull the plug. America is tired of being a Police force of the world.
Why the NATO has chosen us to fight their battles I don't know. My father fought a war the was to end all wars, I fought, was wounded twice so my son and grandsons wouldn't have to fight in any wars, now?
Nostradamus was quoted as saying "A struggle and power will rise out of the East, they will consume everything in their path, they will light up the dawn sky with a new sun, that will blaze brighter than any sun has ever shone. They will consume the nations of the world and, overcome the peaceful nations"
I don't even want to think about it.

The contributions of Britain, USA and USSR were all vital to the defeat of the Axis Powers. It's arguable that without the resources of all three, the Axis would have been victorious or the Second World War would have lasted far longer.
We should also not forget the contributions of other notable nations. Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Free Poles, Free French all gave as much as they got.
Even Ireland contributed despite its official position of neutrality, Irish intelligence worked closely with MI5 in hampering Axis sabotage and intelligence efforts. 100,000 men from the island of Ireland served in British uniform (60% were from 26-county Ireland).
Millions of men from British India and Pakistan served in the British Army during World War Two, many of whom served based on the promise of Indian independence after the War.
In occupied countries everywhere, partisans disrupted the Axis war effort, and civilians struggled to live their lives whilst waiting for liberation.
Lets not denigrate others' efforts in the War. So many people took part that no one person and no one nation can take exclusive credit.

It was a concerted effort.
You have insulted Americans as much as they have insulted everyone else for the last 60+ years.
I would like to point out however, that if the Irishman above would like to engage in his favourite sport of English baiting, then perhaps he should wait until the topic changes away from the World Wars. Otherwise he's on to a hiding to nothing. I will refrain myself, as the Americans say 'swatting a fly with a Buick'.

The contribution of Soviet Union and the US were the main reasons for the Allied victory against Germany.
The UK also was a major player in the war, but its effort exhausted the country especially in lives and financially that the UK never recovered. The US and Soviet Union emerged as the two superpowers after the war. The UK had to give up its empire after the war.

I suggest you go to the American War Cemetery overlooking the beach where they landed on D Day. We could never have won the war without the financial, material and physical aid we received from our allies in the USA. Yes they were a bit late in joining us but their assistance was absolutely invaluable. If you honestly think we could have won WW2 without them you are deluding yourself. If it is a discussion you want about the subject I think you may be in the wrong forum. This is Yahoo Answers! Where you ask a question and receive answers - no point in getting upset if the answers are not what you want.

America is writing popular history through Hollywood, they are the victors of the post war reconstruction so not much we can do about it. Churchill was half American, so how long before there's a film with him having a Yankee accent?
