in the animal kingdom is important as well? For example, if you're not a pretty male bird, you're not getting anything sexy girl bird that night...but if we really are different from animals, and associate with a higher understanding, then shouldn't we naturally base our soulmate on personality, and now what our animal-infested media conveys?

It puzzles me that you ask this question here? Why not in philosophy or science where you would get a true answer. And why ask this of atheists? Are atheists the only people who can give a worthwhile answer? Well anyway: There are several elements which come together that make humans different from other animals (we are animals). Each is not a unique feature rather a development of. 1 our thumbs, which evolved to handle tools, have evolved way beyond that of our nearest relative the chimps 2 language, we can use language to move information through time and space. chimps can only say "Come look here at this." we can talk about what happened yesterday and what we can do tomorrow. This is what Einstein meant when he talked about standing on giants shoulders. 3 Imagination, there is evidence that chimps and others have imagination. after all it is a vital element of self defence. We though can dream up all sorts of things including God and the like. 4 self awareness Again other animals do show self awareness Elephants, Chimps, Whales and others all show it. Humans, though take it to a whole new level which can even lead them to understand their own (scary) non-existence. 5 A sense of Justest Chimps show this. they will, within their groups, defend the rights of other group members if it is felt they are unjustly treated. 6 the ability to solve problems We call it intellegence. again chimps and others show this. Chips IQ is about the same as a 4 year old child.

Yet another interesting question. It just shows that animals fall in love with other animals based on personality, since generally the same species look the same. And some humans, on the other hand, tend to prefer a girl with looks mostly, rather than personality.

As for my favorite kind of apple pie...I've never eaten apple pie in my life!

How sad is that?

Let's take a few moments to mourn over shadow prince not having ever eaten an apple pie.

We are really not that different. Looks are just as important to humans when attracting a mate. I think there are some differences though. Humans are individuals with differing likes and dislikes. That means we are not all attracted to the same thing, contrary to media beliefs. For example, someone who might be considered ugly to one person could easily be considered desirable to another. In the animal kingdom, this is seldom the case. You pretty much have to be the strongest, brightest, hairiest or whatever to attract a mate. Once the mate has been found, with a few exceptions, it is for one purpose only, breeding. There are some animals that mate for life, but not many. There are, of course, humans who desire a mate for the sole purpose of sexual needs, but I think primarily we desire a long term relationship. It takes looks to attract a mate, then the personality has to come in to play in order to establish a lasting relationship.
