In Greek mythology, the father of Zeus was a god named Cronos (which actually means time in Greek). He is often pictured as carrying a sickle. Very often as new religions develop, they absorb myths from previous religions into their own. Old Father Time and the Grim Reaper developed in this way from Cronos

In modern-day, European-based folklore, Death is also known as the Grim Reaper. In the Septuagint version of the Bible, Death is portrayed in the apocryphal book of Tobit as Azrael, the angel of death.

The Grim Reaper is thought to have come from a mixture of characters, primarily the later concept of the Greek god Cronos and his son Thanatos.
Cronos was seen as Old Father Time and with Night gave birth to the world, out of Chaos. His image was seen as a robed figure, carrying a staff, he kept the world in order like the new agriculturalists the Greeks were.
Thanatos, their son, was also known as Death. He lived in the Underworld and collected the souls of men. He guided them to Hades. He was only a spirit so, when travelling in the over world he wore a dark cape to give him form and carried a sword to cut the thread of life.
These images are later seem in Medieval art in the form of a hooded figure with no face or skeletal form, as in the Death card of the Tarot.
These are the earliest sources of the archetype as I know it.

The personification of death as a living, sentient entity is a concept that has existed in many societies since the beginning of recorded history. In Western cultures, death is usually given the name "The Grim Reaper" and shown as a skeletal figure carrying a large scythe, and wearing a midnight black gown, robe or cloak with a hood, or sometimes, a white burial shroud. Usually when portrayed in the black-hooded gown, only his eyes can be seen.

He's a character from pre-Christian Celtic legend. The only certainty about life is death. The Celtic religion was animist and the grim reaper was the personification of death. Along with many other Celtic legends, he survived into the Christian era through mumming plays.

The Grim Reaper is a Demon from the underworld. He comes to collect your soul when you die. For instance.....when people that worship God die....and angel comes to fetch them to take them to Heaven. The Grim Reaper is just the opposite.

Reapers are responsible for escorting deceased souls to the afterlife, and they refuse - or are unable - to tell the deceased what awaits them. According to Castiel, reapers gather in groups "at times of great catastrophe" or distress, and he lists the Chicago Fire of 1871, the San Francisco Earthquake of 1906, and the destruction of Pompeii as examplesThe dead soul may choose not to accompany them, and to remain in this realm as ghosts, and eventually become vengeful spirits. Reapers serve Death and are not aligned with Heaven or Hell.
Some reapers have become rogue operators, collecting souls or moving them between Heaven and Hell for a price. This may have been prompted by the averted Apocalypse, as according to Balthazar
"It's a new era. No rules, no destiny. Just utter and complete freedom."[3]
Neither this nor Death's feelings or knowledge of rogue reapers has been confirmed.
One group of reapers works as bounty hunters. Dean refers to them as the "Delta Force" of reapers.

A reapers true form appears to be spirit like, with a white aura surrounding them. While the majority of reapers that have been seen have been male, they do appear to have different genders, as Death has referred to the reaper Tessa as female.
