There has been a lot of speculation about these lyrics and "Procol Harum" have refused to answer questions about it. So, the most popular theory is that the song's purpose is to evoke emotions rather than talk about something specific (plus, that it was written under the influence of "illegal substances"). But I guess all this mystery just adds to the beauty of this amazing song.

That's why it's called 'psychedelic', I guess, no one knows. I think it's pretty obvious that the first verse is about performing ("The crowd called out for more") under the influence of some mind-altering substance (I was feeling kind of seasick ... And the room was hummin' harder/As the ceiling flew away). I imagine the rest is a description of the events afterward, but I guess you had to be there. I, for one, would like to have heard "the miller's" story. Must've been a shocker to turn a "ghostly" girl paler!

The lyrics may be nonsense, but it's the music that endures. An incredible tribute to Bach, without actually ripping him off, as some believe.
