OOh! The local council and the county council, the fire brigade and the police force all have to be paid for... Council tax replaced poll tax which in turn replaced the old rates system . The changes have been made to try to make the tax fairer and to spread the costs... The county council is responsible for schools, libraries. lots of health issues. old peoples homes, roads and highways, parks, and many other things.Local councils attend to rubbish collection and recycling, street lighting, repairs to minor roads and pavements, local parks, council housing, day centres for elderly and young, street cleaning, town planning, building control , licencing of pubs, clubs etc and inspections, trading standards, and food and catering hygiene .. Again many other things too . then the police and fire brigade have their budgets too. Water and sewerage rates are entirely separate and are paid to the water company direct. Although all these services are necessary and people require them they still moan when the bill has to be paid... Around £100 a month for most ordinary houses . A lot more for really posh ones. How are all these things paid for in Ireland then?

Tell me about it!! Your paying for the NHS and the education system etc, as well as the street lighting & dustbinmen etc. The dustbin men seem to take great delight in blocking off the roads whenever I'm late for work - it costs me £20 to sit my 2 year old in the dentists chair, as we can't find an NHS dentist, and if you want your child to be able to spell their own name before they're seven years old, you have to pay at least £5000 a year per child for a decent school... I think if you don't use the NHS or the education system - you should get some of your taxes back! But no - then where would the money come from to send thieving junkies on rehabilitative holidays?!...

It's a combination of all the services founded by the council, so it's for bins, schools , police, street lights, everything, everryone hates paying it, it seems like a complete rip-off!!

Our water rates are separate its to pay for our local councillors , rubbish collections and our local police force We are paying way to much and we are not seeing much evidence of how well our money is spent

Its a way of councillors making lots of money - for themselves! Its not for water but for things like paying the dustmen, street-cleaners, council workforce, repairing roads and stuff of that ilk. What I thought of it when living in the UK is not printable!!!!!!!!!!!!!
