Most say "I will do what is best for the people".

If politicians did what people think is best for them (I am assuming majority rules), the civil rights movement would never have gained any ground, we still would have invaded Iraq, there be even more rampant government spending programs, etc...(make your own). While leaders are accountable to their populations they must protect unpopular voices from a tyrannical majority.

Political parties , interest groups, and lobbyist all exist because people do not agree on what is the best policy for them. The questions that everyone agrees on, have long since been settled and written into law, and not a subject of debate. We elect politicians that we think will defend our interest, but know they must make compromises for the country to work. It is every politician's job to sell out his supporters.

They will never be heard. Special interests will trample the reputation of said individual until we elect a idiot who is severely invested in a major economic interest.
Money elects a President.

What's best for the individual is not always best for the people, and what's best for the people is not always best for the individual. Same goes with the majority population and the minority population.
