I was wondering if an external hard drive can be used like an internal hard drive. For instance if I had no internal hard drive can I buy a external hard drive like this one http://e3wwwtest.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136059 that only powers up using a usb cable and expect it to work the same as an inernal hard drive. Like can I use it to play games and surf the net or is an external hard drive only used for storage.

ehh. i've tried using my external for some things.. ..you can't boot anything off it on start up.. like an O/S.. you need an internal hard drive for the O/S. but i use mine for storage of everything i don't wanna lose such as.. music, movies, games, software... etc.

Yes but I bought an external 360 G for about $80; what you proposed is certainly OK for Linux setup but Windows might be dodgy on that point.

Also USB is slow, I use internal DVD drive to load up a Live CD Linux on that HD-less computer as a cheap P2 home theater.

I am quite sure that you need at least one internal hard drive, doesn't have to be that big in memory capacity. But you need an internal one to install your Operating System. All other programs/games can be installed in the external hard drive.
