Hi Purple,

I agree, poetry is a higher level of language, so it will be not understood to all people but....
The reason people like different artist is because the need for verity is high in our society. We are naturally recognize something that is different and stands out, so in a sense the average person (not that I think there is such a thing) is "boring" and no one wants to be identified with average.
A bit of a shame, I would like our young people to appreciate simplicity and being ourselves. I agree with you, it is missing a bit.
What sells is not what is good or appreciated, and artists mean nothing if they don't have fans and buyers or listeners and if this is what makes it easy to sell to them, They are very smart to stand out and have weird costumes and crazy sounds and amusing names.

In this world all you can do if it bothers you is stay true to yourself and "Be Special, Be Yourself".

MQ: I think it is perfectly fine to download music if there is an intention to buy the album. Personally, I would rather buy the album. But going into MQ2... I am a 16 year old without a job. I don't get an "allowance", I can't get a job because there are none, and so I download. And people can get mad all they want...but I download any album I want, and if indeed I do find a job, I have every intention of buying the music I listen to, or better yet, buying the band's merch. Either way I'm supporting them (although I have heard before it is more support to the band to buy the merch but I don't know so much about this..). I have bought a couple albums already when I get some money, but rarely do I ever have any and my dad won't buy me music. so it's either I download or do without until I get a job of some sort...but, unfortunately, it is really hard to where I live :(

Those that you described may stand out in the beginning as novelties, sort of circus clowns of music.. but those who last are the ones with real talent. Besides with so many recording companies coming out with so many artists, a stand out name, image and personality is a must. A controvarsial story (a checkered past, love story, even a nude photo or two) is helpful too. At least for initial recognition. All things being equal, whose cd will you want more? The one with just the anonymous singing voice or the one who appeared on MTV?
Musical lyrics are mostly poetic and metaphorical in nature so it is not suprising that their real meanings can be hard to discern at times. Of course some are more direct and literal than others. George Michael's "I Want Your Sex" can't be more direct and to the point.

I think songs are always hard to understand.....like big girl dont cry for example
Fergie sings that id better get a move on with my life....its time to be a big girl now and big girls dont cry
then she goes on to say " its got nothing to do with you"
whatever all you need to know are the lyrics so you can sing along... unless it is meant to be political like pinks dear mr president

Yes, thats cause 'artists' can't write a decent song these days. They have to add some sort of mind-boggling line to it, that no one understands. But they add it, only cause it goes perfectly with the tune!

*Something kinda ooh, Jumping on my tutu
Something 'side of me, Wants some part of you oo-ooh*

definately, they go the long way about describing something like if i were to sing "I went into a room with a shining bright light, couldn't help but see my own reflection, saw a thrown waiting for it's king, running my hand through the cold blue water" would you think i was actually talking about going into the bathroom to take a shower... hahaha
