everyone will tell you it's a telescope, in the mountain behind me, Mt Graham in Arizona - it's huge due to the huge opportunity here for clear skies in the desert. it was something else for them to get it up the mountain in one piece.
It's one of the things Arizona does not get enough credit for. Usually we are in the news for some poilitical stupidity.

but you asked for the biggest mirror, not the biggest telescope, right?

I wish I knew where the biggest mirror was so I could really see myself and how I fit into the bigger picture.

The largest mirror used is the Large Binocular Telescope on Mount Graham has a diameter of 8.4 metres. It weighs about 20 tonnes and is made of 40 mm thick glass and costs about $4 million. This mirror is 100 times bigger in diameter than the 8.3 metres used in the Japanese National Observatory telescope in Hawaii.

The CANARY Large Telescope (GTC), is a segmented primary mirror telescope 10.4 meters in diameter and high performance whose installation is being completed in one of the best places in the Northern Hemisphere: the Observatory Roque de los Muchachos ( Palma, Canary Islands). It expects to receive "first light" in 2007.

Project GTC is a Spanish initiative, led by IAC (Institut d'Astrophysique de Canarias) with the strong support of the State Administration and the Autonomous Canaria, and the involvement of Mexico, through the IA (Institute of Astronomy de la Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico) and INAOE (National Institute of Astrophysics, Optics and Electronics), and the United States, through the University of Florida.
