"Amnesty International considers Leonard Peltier to be a political prisoner whose avenues of redress have long been exhausted.... Amnesty International recognizes that a retrial is no longer a feasible option and believes that Leonard Peltier should be immediately and unconditionally released."

-- Amnesty International, April 6, 1999

He has been incarcerated for 30 years.

"The United States government overreacted at Wounded Knee. Instead of carefully considering the legitimate grievances of the Native Americans, the response was essentially a military one which culminated in the deadly firefight on June 26, 1975 .... The United States government must share responsibility with the Native Americans for the ... firefight ... the government's role can properly be considered a mitigating circumstance."

Judge Gerald W. Heaney, 1991, affirmed position in 2000
United States Senior Circuit Judge

The FBI has disseminated false and inflammatory statements to members of the U.S. Congress, the Department of Justice, the White House, and the public, thus denying Mr. Peltier his right to fair clemency and parole reviews and Congressional oversight. Despite repeated calls for Congressional hearings by the U.S. Civil Rights Commission, Amnesty International, and individual members of Congress, no Congressional committee has yet had the courage to provide a forum by which to air the truth and bring closure to this case.

is there a question here or just a rant. One may say that the rant is biased and not disclosing full information, or that the ranter should stop hanging out with such little juvies. I know that i personally have seen problems with police officers trying to meet quota or make a name for themselves against people i knew. However their attempts failed when it got to the court and the holes were poked through. I wouldnt say the problems is the courts as much as the officers of the law involved in the offense. Perhaps your examples would have turned out differently if your first friend hadnt run, and if the second hadnt been involoved in an attempting hacking. Im not sure how things went down in your example but if you believe in standing up for your rights why would you ever agree to violations you did not commit. They cant add more charges after the case, if you dont plea out, you face potential consquences, they cant suddenly add more to the original charges. Id say you need a better lawyer *****EDIT: oh i get it, you like to stand up for your rights, as long as you dont have to face getting in trouble... then i guess you should have just let them search your car. You always have a choice. You just chose the one with less hassle in court.that is fine, but dont act like thats all you could do. You weighed your options and you made a choice. AND NO after charges are filed, and you are faced with a plea more charges CAN NOT be added. You will be forced to stand against those already established charges. so if you plea to 2 instead of the 3 original that is your choice. Its not like there would suddenly be 5. You make a choice, dont blame the system. Get a lawyer.

The US President is empowered to overturn (via a pardon) or commute the sentence of a properly constituted court. EG: Pres. Bush for Scooter Libby and earlier, Pres Ford for Richard Nixon. Clinton did it as he left office for some rather less well-known criminals.

The whole idea is directly contrary to the fundamental principles of the rule of law in which the very basic principle is that everyone is equal before the law.
Apparently, everyone apart from the President.

My best suggestion is to run the following name on a google search "John Langbein." He is a legal historian who teaches at Yale Law School and is the foremost critic of the common law system of justice. You should get some good ideas from some of his writings.
