last year you could say florida was the best team, the year before that texas was the best team, but regardless of whoever wins this year, will it matter. I know there are a lot of homers here but can anyone say without a doubt that any team is better than the other. will it be apparent to the NCAA that a playoff is needed? everybody here is fighting over which team "had the most respectable loses", it that what determines the two best teams?

A "true" champion? I think most college football fans that truly know the game and are willing to be objective will admit that they have very little faith in the BCS. Soon, no one will care what the BCS decides and college football and its fans will be the loser at the end of the day. It would be nice if someone with deep pockets (Donald Trump, etc.) would fund a playoff system between the eight best schools. It would strip the BCS of any false credibility it had left and the financial backer would be a hero. The only way to have a true champion is for the fans to dismiss the BCS altogether.

I think it is becoming clear that the current system is not working.

Based on non-conference results, its hard to say that winning the SEC does not mean something significant, but the winner of the SEC could very easily have two losses against the other equally strong teams in the SEC.

Likewise, based on non-conference opponents, its hard to say anything good about the Big 10 this year.

In the current system, it is more likely that a 12-0 team from the Big 10 will make the Championship Game then a 10-2 team from the SEC even if that 10-2 team is objectively better than the 12-0 team.

Right now my projection for the Championship Game is Ohio State vs. the winner of Oklahoma vs. the winner of the Kansas-Missouri game (in other words the Big 12 Champion). I am not sure that any of those four teams would qualify as a "true" national champion. And for those who say that the only undefeated team should be the national champion, that might end up being Hawaii when all is said and done and nobody is suggesting Hawaii will make the championship game.

There won't be a 'true' national champion without some playoff. You will never see it happen. Too much money at stake for the bowl-eligible schools to just run a playoff only format. Unless they find a way to combine a playoff and the bowls into one system, it will be very rare that there will be a consensus on a national champion.

First, there will be a champion, by definition, because there is a system to decide on it.
Will the champion necessarily be the best team? now that's a question for phylosophy.
The goal of a sport is to win, and do it in the right games so you end up #1 according to the system. That, in my opinion, puts you as the best competitor among all, by definition.
If you wnat to talk about playing quality, that's open for opinions.
I think the teams that are candidtaes for best play quality are:
Ohio state, LSU, Oklahoma, Boston College, Oregon and Kentucky.
Personally I like Oklahoma as the leader amongst them, but this is only my selection. There is no absolute standard to determine this category.
So to summarize:
This year's champion, like every year, will be deserved by definition, but not necessarily have the highest quality of its football.

Actually in my eyes Boise ST was the true champion. In any other sport in any other league in the world the only team not to lose a game would be the champion. Only in major college football is this not the case.

And we are going in to week nine and the BCS is already doomed to failure once again. Playoffs needed now.

no there will not be a true champion this year. in my opinion there was never a true champion because i am for a playoff system and this year is the perfect example because teams in the top ten are dropping like flies. THE BCS SYSTEM IS BOGUS but if i had to pick for the nat champs right now i would say OREGON AND WVU OHIO ST WILL LOSE TO MICH
BOSTON COLLEGE WILL LOSE LSU WILL LOSE TO AL OR AR OK WILL LOSE IN CONF GAME THOSE ARE MY PREDICTION

Didn't you see Texas Tech get crushed by Mizzou? Or Hawaii have to go to OT to beat a lousy San jose State team? LSU and Oklahoma are the two best. I want to see them play. teams don't have to go undefeated to be good, or the best for that year.

no because no one has truly dominated in their schedules or conferences. all they do is play these weaker teams and win big but woohoo!!! you beat little sisters of the poor you're great. I mean if a team say Notre Dame for instance (yeah they suck i know) but if they went of and played USC, LSU, Ok U, OhSt, Mich, if ya get my drift and play all these top tier schools and win them all then yeah you can say that they are a true champion because they beat the best of the best

The NCAA desperately needs a playoff system, but there WILL be a national title game regardless. At this point it looks like it's wide open but it will all clear up as the season unwinds.
