I don't know what generation it is, but I bought it in mid-2005 and it's 4GB.

I've replaced the battery myself for 30$ earlier this year, and I was wondering if you can do the same for the memory... I really don't feel like dishing out for a new one, but is that what I'm going to have to do?

Secret is correct you cannot add more memory.

However, the Apple online store sells refurbished iPods starting @ $149 for 8 MG capacity. http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore?node=home/specialdeals/ipod

Nope, there is no way to expand the memory, but you can look into compressing songs, taking off old music, ect. to reduce the space you take up.

Sorry but you cannot maximize your space.
