If my ex were to lose his job, can he petition the court to reduce the alimony he pays me? (He angrily informed me that he could get it reduced or suspended if he was out-of-work or made less money.) Our divorce was uncontested, we did the paperwork ourselves, and there was no verbage allowing for a change in income to change alimony amounts. We are residents of, and the paperwork was filed in, Nevada. All help and answers are greatly appreciated!

Any change of circumstances is grounds for a reduction and/or suspension of alimony. There are many factors that are considered, including actual and prospective income.

The fact that there was NO VERBAGE regarding modifications is the reason it can be modified. Had you two not wanted it to be modified for any reason that should have been indicated in your agreement.

Sorry to give you the bad news. Do not despair. Alimony can again be modified once he is again employed.

Where are all these non-celebrity spouses getting alimony? Since I primarily meet non-wealthy people, I've never met anyone who got alimony. The only time I hear about it is when celebrities break up. Why is cheating so awful, compared to violence, or stealing, or drug addiction, if you're trying to come up with reasons why someone shouldn't get money after a divorce? I'm curious if there really is any spouse who is entitled to alimony-I have a feeling no one could meet the standard.
